What is Modern Decorating and is it For You

What is Modern Decorating and is it For YouIt’s been 20 years since you’ve done anything with your house. Or, you’ve just moved into a house or apartment that hasn’t been renovated in more than 20 years and you think it needs a change. Where do you start. What style is best for you? You have heard of many different term for decorating styles. County, Adirondack, Baroque, Edwardian, and yes, Modern. Now, where do you start and what do they all mean. In a nutshell, a modern decorating style is one in which employs straight, clean lines with generally plain looking furniture and more often than not uses darker than normal colors. The main premise behind the modern motif is to eliminate clutter, aid in the ease of cleaning and make everything in the room look and feel organized and functional in it’s own way. Room decorated using the modern style will be free of most knicknacky type of things and have the main focus on a few more prominent items in the room instead of many things scattered about. People who love the modern lifestyle will generally spend a large amount of money of those few and special items instead of spreading the money around on a variety of different things. The darker colors used in modern decorating like reds, blacks, greens and occasionally some whites mixed in are used to accent and backdrop the various items that accessorize the rooms they are decorated with. You must use caution with this approach though depending on the construction of the rooms you are using this technique with. You do not want to make them feel or appear smaller than they are thereby creating a claustrophobic atmosphere within the room. You may have noticed in many modern schemes the use of large painted blocks of many different darker colors on walls and used in different types of flooring. Oftentimes these blocks on the walls are accessorized by shelving that will accent modern art pieces. Modern paintings are also used in conjunction with differing wall colors giving the viewer the impression that less is more and therefore much better. Young professionals are especially into the modern looks of classy and sleek and work diligently to tastefully decorate all the rooms with minimal amounts of furniture. Most furniture will not be accessorized with pillows and blankets but rather have only a few floor accessories and end tables needed for hosting parties. Obviously, the modern look is not for those who have or are considering having children. Modern and children do not mix well but that does not mean that you cannot create a special room with the modern look just for you and off limits to the kids. Generally, master bedrooms with attached reading or exercise quarters are excellent to employ the modern look while decorating with a more contemporary design for the rest of the house. Contemporary you say? Oh yes! But that is another article. Contemporary is another look altogether but is just as functional and actually melds quite well with modern. It is something you may well want to consider in your next designs plans.
